Well this is sure a funny subject. I know some Dr. Laura type will have to disagree with me, but I have to say, as horrible as it sounds, that I find bribing the most effective way to get my son to listen. "Do you want a lolly pop after dinner?", "Then eat all your food!" "Would you like me to throw your toys in the trash?", "then pick them up when I ask!" "Do you want to go to the park today?", "Then take a nap!" Oh and my personal favorite that I am quite proud of, "do you want to get bugs in your mouth(referring to germs)," "Then brush your teeth!" These are just a few of the things I use on a pretty consistent basis. The most important trick, is to follow through!! It doesn't work if you don't. If you give them a treat after they haven't finished their meal, they will never take you seriously. I like to think of it as agreements. We will agree to do this, if you do that. It is compromising, that's all. Right? It is how we live. "Do you want to get a successful job?", "Then finish college."
