Children's Programs- Teaching them to say "that sucks!"

So I was cleaning my house and put on Spiderman the cartoon for my son. All of a sudden I heard one of the characters on the show say "that sucks." My jaw dropped. I don't know... Am I being naive to think that there is some responsibility with the producers of these shows to keep phrases like that out? I didn't know that I needed to pre-monitor the cartoon network!?! It is everywhere. I think for now, I'll keep it on PBS, before my son tells his teacher that "that sucks!"

  1. I agree with you. I used to think my parents were off their rocker when I said, "that sucks!" for the first time when I was like twelve. My mom was pretty upset, my dad didn't show too much concern, but I am sure he didn't support my need to say such a phrase.

In this day in age that phrase is used by youngsters, almost as often as "that's gay!" I think both are unneccessary as common as they are, but its acceptable and so common practice most people don't think about it.

The ratings for movies and television shows have changed dramatically since I was growing up. In some instances, there are those movies that I think (for kids sake) should be rated R or deemed for mature audiences only and others I think are rated more seriously than neccessary.

The other night I watched Quiksilver (old movie with Kevin Bacon) and it had bad lannguage and innuendo and violence and it was PG in the 80s and then Pretty Woman in the 90s is R and although there is sexual innuendo, there is little to no bad language and no gratuitous sex scenes and it was R.

    The ratings frustrate me too.

From what I have seen on Cartoon Network, it can be kinda racey.

  2. Yeah, cartoon network is geared towards adults believe it or not. I would just stick to Nickelodeoens Nick Jr. and the Disney channel and yes PBS is good.
